Heidenheim – FC Koln Predictions and Preview

  • Manager Frank Schmidt will be unable to cheer on his team from the sidelines as he recovers from ankle surgery. He will miss the final game of the season, but his assistant coach, Bernhard Raab, will take over the team. Raab aims to end the club’s debut Bundesliga season on a high note by securing a place in the top half of the table. Many people thought this position would be out of reach for the team this term.
  • The club has had an impressive season so far, despite being widely tipped to immediately return to the second tier after being promoted 12 months ago. Their 1-1 draw with Freiburg last time out means they have lost just one of their last seven outings (W2, D4). As a result, Heidenheim is in ninth place, although they could drop as low as 12th if they fail to win this game.
  • Opponents Köln will be hoping for a slip-up, as anything other than a victory here will consign them to the 2. Bundesliga next season. Even a victory might not be enough to keep them up, as they also need Union Berlin to lose, and a four-goal swing in goal difference to secure a relegation play-off place.
  • Timo Schultz’s team has only won twice in 13 matches (D6, L5). It’s perhaps no surprise that they find themselves in such a perilous position heading into the final round of fixtures. However, they can draw inspiration from the class of 2020-21, who won their last match of the season to jump into the relegation play-off spot, and then beat the drop by seeing off Holstein Kiel over two legs.
  • Striker Tim Kleindienst, back from suspension, has scored his last nine goals for Heidenheim after half-time. Cologne’s Florian Kainz has tasted defeat in just two of the last 39 games in which he has scored. This incredible run dates back to an astonishing ten years (W29, D8)!
  • 12 of Heidenheim’s 16 home league games this season have seen both teams score, including each of the last six.
