Crystal Palace – Brentford Predictions and Preview
- Two sides who lost in midweek Premier League (PL) action do battle this Saturday at Selhurst Park, as Crystal Palace and Brentford face off in what could prove to be one of both sides’ most important outings of the season. The pair have slipped towards the drop zone of late, particularly Palace, who are winless in eight consecutive league matches (D3, L5) after a 2-1 defeat at Chelsea.
- Over that period, no side in the PL has recorded fewer than the three points accumulated by Roy Hodgson’s men, a return that has heaped pressure onto his shoulders. With rumours circulating that he could be replaced in the very near future, the veteran manager will be hoping that his Palace outfit can end a run of five straight PL H2H draws, especially as two of the last three saw them lead heading into the closing stages.
- In fact, this is the only fixture in PL history to see each of the opening five meetings end level, and like their hosts here, Brentford will be hoping to snap that streak and break a run of four successive PL losses in the process. They start this matchday one place and one point better off than Palace, but that could change quickly if the visitors fail to improve on their away form which has proved wayward so far.
- Only three sides in the PL have taken fewer points than the Bees’ seven on the road this season (W2, D1, L5), although Brentford should be incentivised by the fact they are chasing a little bit of history here, as they look to become just the third London side in PL history to win five consecutive away derbies in the capital!
- Players to watch: Despite only playing eight PL matches this season, Michael Olise is Palace’s second-highest scorer with three goals, though his side have only ever won once when he’s been on the scoresheet in the PL (D3, L3). As for Brentford, they’ll be looking to midweek scorer Yoane Wissa, who has seen all four of his goals this term arrive in the first-half, for inspiration in the continued absence of Ivan Toney and Bryan Mbeumo.
- Hot stat: Crystal Palace’s PL matches have averaged just 2.47 goals this season – the second-lowest amount in the competition.
