Aston Villa – Juventus Predictions and Preview
- After three wins in their first three UEFA Champions League (UCL) matches in the league phase, Aston Villa experienced a major setback with a 1-0 defeat to Club Brugge on matchday four. This result is part of an ongoing six-match winless streak for Villa, which includes two draws and four losses. On Saturday, they managed to draw 2-2 at home against Crystal Palace, although they could have fared much worse as they trailed twice in that game.
- Ending this run against European giants Juventus will be a challenging task, but Unai Emery’s team can take heart from the fact that they have won seven of their last eight home matches in major European competitions. They have already defeated one European giant at Villa Park this season (1-0 against Bayern Munich), and after winning their last three home games against Italian opposition, they might feel confident of toppling Juve.
- All three of those wins were without scoring, and in fact, the last Italian team to score at Villa Park was Juventus themselves back in 1983! Juve won 2-1 that day, but their success on English soil has been limited. They have won only three of their last 15 away matches against English sides in European competition, with nine draws and nine losses.
- Improving on that record won’t be easy for a team that has won just one of their last seven UCL away matches, with two draws and four losses. This is especially true as they face off against Emery again. He has already beaten Juventus while managing two different clubs, and no manager has ever beaten Juventus with three different clubs in the history of this competition.
- Players to watch: Villa’s Ross Barkley was on target at the weekend, but Villa might be secretly hoping he doesn’t score again. None of his last seven scoring club appearances have ended in victory (D3, L4). Midfield rival Weston McKennie has scored five of his last seven club goals with his head, with four of those five coming before the hour mark.
- Hot stat: None of Villa’s last five games against Italian opposition saw both teams score.
