AC Milan – Cagliari Predictions and Preview

  • Sérgio Conceição has had an incredible start as the manager of AC Milan. The 50-year-old replaced Paulo Fonseca in late December and has already won both of his games in charge. Under his leadership, the club has achieved its first piece of silverware since 2021/22, winning the Supercoppa Italiana after a thrilling victory over bitter rivals Inter. In that match, Milan came from behind 2-0 to claim a last-gasp 3-2 success.
  • Now, Milan must maintain that form in Serie A, where they face a tough challenge to extend their four-year run of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. In their last seven league matches, they have won just two times, four times drawn, and one lost. This puts them eight points outside the top four, although with most teams ahead of them by at least one game, hope is not lost yet.
  • History suggests that Milan will notch up another victory against Cagliari, who have won just one of 39 head-to-head matches this century (D8, L30)! However, when these two teams met earlier in the season, Cagliari twice came from behind to secure a 3-3 draw. They also showed plenty of fight by earning a 2-1 victory over ten-man Monza in their most recent outing.
  • This was a timely success for Davide Nicola’s side, who had lost five in a row across all competitions before and would have been in the Serie A relegation zone had they lost. Instead, they come into this round outside the bottom three on goal difference. The manager is warning his players not to rest on their laurels, especially as they last won back-to-back league matches in March.
  • Players to watch:
    * Rafael Leão, who Conceição says can become the “best player in the world,” has scored more goals against Cagliari than any other opponent, six in just nine unbeaten head-to-heads (W7, D2).
    * Roberto Piccoli’s six goals against Cagliari this season have all served as the first or last of the match.
  • Hot stat:
    * Both Milan (W7, D2) and Cagliari (W3, D3) are unbeaten this season when scoring first in Serie A.
