Match Preview

Despite sitting above the Turkish Süper Lig’s relegation zone on goal difference alone, Fenerbahçe make the journey to Russia holding a slim 1-0 advantage after their Europa League (EL) first-leg home win. By no means is this tie over yet though, especially considering that Zenit St Petersburg progressed to the knockouts largely thanks to their perfect group stage home record (W3), that saw them concede just once.
However, the Russians scored more than once in just one of their six group stage fixtures. They do have EL Round of 32 history on their side though – Zenit have progressed from this stage in four of five previous occasions, winning all five legs held in Russia, each by two goals or more. In fact incredibly, they’ve never lost a home game in the EL proper (W20, D2).
Fenerbahçe travel here burdened by just one win from their 11 Süper Lig away fixtures this season (W1, D4, L6). Unsurprisingly then, they haven’t won a European away game this campaign either (D1, L3), and in more good news for Zenit, the Istanbul outfit have registered just three clean sheets after 17 competitive away games this term.
A glimmer of hope however, is that in the 25 UEFA ties where Fenerbahçe won a first-leg home match, they progressed in 16. Although in four of the five that they held a 1-0 home lead, they were eliminated.
Players to watchRóbert Mak (two EL goals) is the only Zenit player to score more than once this EL campaign. Meanwhile, an instinctive strike from Islam Slimani gave Fenerbahçe their slender first-leg lead.
Stat attack: Six of Zenit’s last seven competitive home games have been decided by a one-goal margin.
Fenerbahçe have failed to score in 58.82% of their competitive away games this season.
The six group stage goals Zenit scored was the lowest tally of any group winner.
