Match Preview

Round 27 of the Premier League (PL) offers up another battle at the bottom as Newcastle welcome Huddersfield to St. James’ Park. The home side enter the round just one point above the relegation spots, while the visitors are all but doomed with 14 points to safety.
Newcastle have won their last two home matches and overall have reasonable form (W2, D1, L2). Looking at the season as a whole, they are the third-worst home team (W4, D1, L8) and have scored less than a goal per match on average (0.92 per match).
The ‘Magpies’ have kept just three clean sheets at home this season, and curiously close to half the league matches here (46.15%) have ended in a 2-1 result either way.
Huddersfield, meanwhile, are not ones to overly test opposition defences this season. Fourteen goals from 26 matches is by some margin the worst tally in the league, and away from home they’ve drawn a blank in five of their last eight.
In fact, the ‘Terriers’ current goals output (0.54 per match) puts them on par to match Derby County’s PL record of just 20 season goals from 2007/08. Striking early, five of their eight PL away goals have been scored in the first half.
The three PL H2Hs played between these sides have all ended 1-0 either way, but have produced an average of 4.67 yellow cards per match.
Players to watch: Salomón Rondón scored in Newcastle’s last home match and has six PL goals this season. Meanwhile, Huddersfield’s danish duo Mathias Jorgensen and Philip Billing has five goals and 11 yellow cards between them.
Stat attack: Five of Newcastle’s last seven PL home matches have produced precisely three goals.
The last eight PL matches at St. James’ Park have produced on average 4.25 yellow cards.
Huddersfield have been losing at HT/FT on 13 occasions this season – the joint highest in the league.
