Match Preview

Having netted just one goal across three games, Lugano are the joint-lowest scorers in the UEFA Europa League (UEL) group stage. Yet whilst that sole strike came against Malmö in the previous H2H, home fans might not be expecting much considering Lugano are winless in their last eight competitive home games (D5, L3), failing to score in five.
Matches do tend to be tight here though, with just one of the last ten seeing the teams separated by more than a single goal. However, the fact remains that Lugano are having a poor domestic season after netting just 1.0 goals on average per league fixture – the exact same average they’ve recorded across their 11 previous UEL matches (W4, D1, L6).
A win will take Malmö into the top two, and with seven wins from their previous nine competitive fixtures (D1, L1), they look in good shape to take all three points – especially considering they’re unbeaten in nine of their last 13 European road trips (W6, D3, L4).
However two of the three away defeats (all ‘to nil’) that they have suffered since May have been in this tournament, with both witnessing the decisive goal scored after the 75th minute. In fact. four of the last five away goals Malmo have conceded (in all competitions) came during this time period.
Players to watch: Swede Alexander Gerndt netted in the reverse fixture – he also scored a first-half winner in Lugano’s last two home wins.
Søren Rieks (MAL) scored last time out – he’s netted the opener in three of the last four games he’s got on the scoresheet.
Stat attack: Four of Lugano’s last five UEL defeats arrived via a one-goal margin.
Malmö’s previous six UEL away defeats have come ‘to nil’.
The opener has been scored within 15 minutes in three of Malmö’s last four competitive games.
