Match Preview

While much of Europe enjoys the winter break, the Championship welcomes in the New Year with Tuesday afternoon football as Bolton Wanderers, desperate to peel away from the relegation zone, travel to in-form Hull.
Hull have turned around a disastrous start to the campaign with an unbeaten run of seven league matches (W5, D2), nearly doubling their goals scored tally for the season over the previous six rounds (from 16 to 30)! However they remain the third-lowest scoring side at home, though five of their 12 goals at the KCOM Stadium have arrived in their last two matches.
Once one of the Championship’s poorer-performing second-half clubs, Hull have also continued to improve that aspect of their game, conceding just twice in the 61-90 minute period during their unbeaten run, whilst scoring six in return.
Bolton recently snapped a 13-game winless streak with victory against fellow strugglers Rotherham, but they still need to address the issue of ten consecutive away trips without a win (D4, L6).
Home and away, their starts have been particularly worrying, leading at the break just twice so far (half-time: W2, D13, L10) and opening the scoring only eight times. Interestingly, they have begun matches in better fashion on the road, holding a goal difference of -2 in the 0-30 minute period away, compared with -6 at home.
Key battle: Hull’s Jarrod Bowen is on fire, with three braces in his last six Championship appearances. He’ll be challenged by Bolton centre-back Mark Beevers, who leads the league for clearances per game (8.6).
Stat attack: Just one team has scored in the last five Championship H2H meetings going back to 2015/16.
Eight of Hull’s last nine Championship home games this season have seen two or fewer goals scored.
All but three of Bolton’s last 18 Championship matches have produced under 2.5 total goals.
