Match Preview

AZ Alkmaar face VVV-Venlo on a run of four straight Eredivisie victories – their best run of league victories since a seven-match streak in November/December 2017. Even more impressively, AZ haven’t conceded a league goal in 2019 – or 366 minutes of Eredivisie football!
The hosts have also scored more goals (13) than any other league side this year so far. Their historical record against Venlo is a good one too, with the ‘Cheeseheads’ losing just one of their 12 top-flight home games against their weekend visitors since 1976/77 (W8, D3, L1).
Venlo snuck back into European contention after their 2-1 victory over Willem II at the weekend, although this looks like it may be a bridge too far. Indeed, with just one win from their last five away matches (W1, L4) Venlo are the (joint) third-worst form side on the road over that period.
Furthermore, the visitors have conceded at least two goals in each of their last five away matches, for a shocking average of 3.6 goals conceded per match across the period. Venlo boss Maurice Steijn is also winless in eight H2Hs with opposing manager John van den Brom (D3, L5).
Players to watch: AZ starlet Calvin Stengs has scored in three of his last five appearances in all competitions, and has a goal and two assists from his last two league starts.
Venlo top-scorer Peniel Mlapa scored twice to earn his side the three points last weekend, he has nine goals from 17 appearances in his maiden Eredivisie campaign.
Stat attack: Nearly half (four) of AZ’s ten Eredivisie home matches this season have been 1-1 at half-time.
None of AZ’s last six Eredivisie home matches have ended level, but curiously, the two that saw both teams score saw the winner concede first.
Venlo have been losing at both half-time and full-time in six of their last eight away league matches.
