Verona – Atalanta Predictions and Preview

  • Despite giving a solid account of themselves in a fixture that has taken a psychological hold of them, Hellas Verona’s century-long wait for an away win against AC Milan rolled on after they were edged out 1-0 at San Siro over the weekend. Result aside, Verona boss Marco Baroni was pleased with his team’s performance and urged his side to “believe” more as they seek to end their three-match winless league run (D1, L2).
  • Fortunately for Verona, the two wins they’d clocked up before that mean they come into this clash firmly in mid-table, an early season position they’ll be content with having staved off relegation by the skin of their teeth last season with a tie-breaker victory. Another feat of 2022/23 they won’t want to replicate is the league double of defeats against Atalanta, but a dismal record of eight losses from 11 home league matches started as the outsider since the start of last season (W1, D2) surely won’t boost belief.
  • It’s been an impressive few days for Atalanta, who after opening their UEFA Europa League campaign with a 2-0 win against Raków Częstochowa, repeated the scoreline against Cagliari in Serie A (SA) on Sunday. That secured their third win from five to open their SA campaign (L2), but with both of those defeats arriving on the road, they’ll likely make this trip with a bit of trepidation.
  • A quick check of the recent H2H results on Verona turf should help them get over that, as they’re unbeaten in their last five SA visits (W4, D1). Things haven’t quite been so plain sailing for La Dea on the road of late though, as they’ve been defeated in four of their last five SA away games, but the fact all have been by a slender one-goal margin suggests a tight affair could be in order, just like their wins at this venue over the last two seasons.
  • Players to watchCyril Ngonge’s goals in their relegation tie-breaker kept Verona in SA last season, and his two goals so far this term have both been the second of the game. Also on two goals for the season is Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman, who has seen five of his seven career SA away goals arrive after the break.
  • Hot stat: Atalanta have kept just two clean sheets in their last 16 SA away games.
