South Korea W – Germany W Predictions and Preview
- South Korea’s FIFA Women’s World Cup (WWC) campaign has been nothing short of a disaster so far, with two defeats from as many games despite their favourites status. Their latest defeat against Morocco was their tenth loss in 12 WWC finals outings (W1, D1), and the eighth in which they failed to score! As a consequence, the Taegeuk Ladies are eliminated unless they win by at least five goals and Colombia also win their game.
- If there is any chance of qualification, the Koreans must replicate their pre-tournament form when they produced three victories, scoring 12 goals, albeit none of those came against opponents as tough as two-time WWC winners Germany. These sides have never faced each other before, but South Korea’s record of three defeats from as many games vs European opponents at this year’s Arnold Clark Cup will hardly boost confidence.
- Elimination at this stage is simply unthinkable for Germany, a side who have featured in every edition of the WWC and reached at least the quarter-final stage every time. Anything short of victory will leave the door open for Morocco to leapfrog them, so a strong showing from one of the favourites to lift the trophy will be the order of the day for Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s women.
- The Germans have alternated between wins and losses across their last six outings (W3, L3), a pattern they’ll look to continue for at least one more game here after being shocked 2-1 by Colombia on Sunday. Another thing Germany can count in their favour on top of their #2 world ranking and superior pedigree is the fact they’ve travelled just 1,793km in this group stage, the shortest combined distance of any Group H side by some way and almost half of South Korea’s 3,428km.
- Players to watch: Park Eun-sun could be South Korea’s best hope of getting off the mark at this WWC after she contributed to five of their 12 goals in their last three friendlies (G3, A2). Germany’s Alexandra Popp rarely misses a beat, finding the net in eight of her last ten appearances for club and country (G9, A2), including a goal in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final!
- Hot streak: All five of Germany’s WWC victories since the start of the 2019 edition have come without reply.
