Osasuna – Valencia Predictions and PREVIEW
- Ten-man Osasuna stunned reigning La Liga (LL) champions Real Madrid last time out with a spirited 1-1 draw at the Santiago Bernabéu which led to manager Jagoba Arrasate waxing lyrical about a ‘’heroic’’ display from his troops. That result, along with some strong home league form which has seen Osasuna triumph in three of four home games this season (L1), means they currently sit in sixth, which is their highest LL placing after seven rounds since 2005/06 – when they went on to finish fifth.
- Perhaps Osasuna are benefiting from the continuity of Arrasate, their longest serving manager this century who has been described as the ‘’Spanish Jürgen Klopp’’ by the club’s sporting director Braulio. The Basque manager, who oversaw Osasuna’s promotion to the Spanish top-flight in his first full year in charge (2018/19) will be aiming to keep the good times rolling by replicating their 2-1 triumph over opponents here Valencia when these sides last met in April.
- Valencia’s mixed start to their LL campaign (W3, D1, L3) continued with a comeback 2-2 draw at Espanyol on Sunday. They showed heart to equalise in the dying minutes and manager Gennaro Gattuso was optimistic post-match, stating that his young side are still learning and he cannot simply ‘’go to the supermarket and buy experience’’.
- Perhaps he has a point, as Valencia’s average fielded age of 24.2 years old is the youngest in LL this season, but as one of only four sides without an away win this campaign (D1, L2) it is becoming crucial that they end a seven-match winless away streak in the top-flight. We might expect a close encounter here however, as only a point has separated these sides in the final standings in three successive LL campaigns since Osasuna’s promotion!
- Players to watch: With Karim Benzema smashing the bar with his penalty last time out, Osasuna keeper Sergio Herrera hasn’t been beaten from the spot in the last three attempts! Meanwhile, all three of Valencia’s away goals this term have been netted by defenders, although one of those scorers, Gabriel Paulista, will now be looking to secure a first away clean sheet of the season.
- Hot stat: There’s been six red cards in seven LL games involving Valencia this campaign.
