Celta Vigo – Girona Predictions and Preview

  • Celta Vigo, after an impressive start to their La Liga campaign, has slowed down in their recent results. On Thursday, they were defeated 1-0 by Atlético Madrid in the final minutes, which left them with just one win in their last five league matches.
  • Their coach, Claudio Giráldez, was frustrated with the way they lost, saying “sometimes football is not fair.” Celta are now trying to avoid losing a third consecutive match in the league for the first time since May 2023. They might get some relief from playing at home, as their loss to Atleti was their first at Estadio de Balaídos this season. Only Real Madrid (12 goals) and Barcelona (10 goals) have scored more goals at their own stadium in Spain’s top flight this term, with Celta having only eight goals in their eight games at home so far.
  • Celta’s opponents, Girona, have had a tough season after a successful 2023-24 campaign. Their poor run continued with a goalless draw with Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday, extending their winless streak to four competitive games (one draw and three losses). This is something they didn’t experience at all last season. In fact, Girona sat in top spot at the same time last campaign after an unbeaten start (six wins and one draw).
  • However, the Catalonians have found it hard to keep clean sheets away from home. They have won just one of their last four La Liga games on the road (one draw and two losses), and only five teams in the division have conceded more goals on their travels this term ahead of this round. So even if they now face a side that they beat in both of last season’s league home-and-away games, the White and Reds will be hoping that their nervous defence can hold out here.
  • Players to watch: Celta’s summer signing Borja Iglesias has three goals already this campaign, and has scored five times in as many career meetings with Girona! Watch out for visiting super sub Cristhian Stuani, as he has two goals this season, both of which arrived in the 80th minute or after, as well as three goals from his last five home-and-away games.
  • Hot stat: Three of the last four meetings between the sides have ended 1-0.
