Match Preview

After an arguably lacklustre start to the domestic campaign, Feyenoord racked up five goals versus Twente last time out, setting them up nicely as they welcome fellow former European Cup winners, Porto. This is Feyenoord’s third Europa League (EL – new format) group stage appearance as they seek to improve on a home record of: W5, L1.
Feyenoord’s record vs Portuguese opposition leaves much to be desired though (W2, D4, L6), albeit just one of those defeats came here in Rotterdam (W2, D3, L1). Notably, seven of those 12 prior encounters saw a goalless first half, and unsurprisingly then, almost two thirds of the goals scored across those 12 games arrived after half-time (19/29 – 2.42 goals per match average).
Porto won the EL on their only prior appearance in the updated competition (2010/11) and have lost just two of 14 previous European encounters against Dutch opposition (W9, D3, L2). They are unbeaten versus Feyenoord across two previous H2Hs that saw just one combined goal (W1, D1).
However, the visitors have conceded at least two goals in three of their last four European away matches (W2, L2, including qualifiers), something they’ve done twice domestically this term. Also of note, is that the last four away goals they’ve conceded came after half-time.
Players to watch: Following a sixth-minute strike in Feyenoord’s last home game, Steven Berghuishas now scored 50 goals in all competitions for the Rotterdam club (132 games).
Porto’s Tiquinho Soares scored a brace on EL matchday one, after scoring two goals in nine prior European appearances.
Stat attack: Feyenoord have lost each of their last three EL matches (qualifiers excluded) without reply, and defeat here would secure their worst run since 2014.
Feyenoord are winless in their last six meetings with Portuguese opponents (D3, L3).
Porto have scored in nine consecutive competitive away games (2.0 scored per match average in 90 minutes).
