This is a real mismatch on paper, and with Brazil enjoying a rich vein of form over the last year, there is only one way this can realistically go!
Winners to nil in each of their last six games following a run to the World Cup (WC) quarter-finals, and 1-0 victors in their last three, Brazil are heavily fancied to get another clean sheet. Facing a Panama side that found its only-ever WC experience a chastening one, Brazil have in fact not conceded a single goal in a friendly match since November 2017.
Brazil’s best time to score has been in the final five minutes before the end of either half, and five of Brazil’s last six goals have seen them score within such proximity to half or full-time. If they score first, then it will be simply ‘damage limitation’ for Panama, who are currently winless in 11 matches, conceding first in their last six (D1, L5).
The H2H record is another reason to believe that Panama are in for a shocking experience. The Central American nation has lost all four historic meetings against Brazil, conceding 16 times without reply. Panama have lost both halves on (at least) the last two occasions, both of which have seen their losing margin exactly double between half-time and full-time.
Players to watch: Deadly enemies in the Premier League title race, goalkeeper Allison and striker Gabriel Jesus are allies for 90 minutes, with the latter scoring for Brazil as recently as October.
For Panama, San Jose’s Harold Cummings scored a short-lived equaliser against Ecuador in his last international outing.
Stat attack: Five of Brazil’s last six matches have produced under 2.5 goals.
Panama are without a clean sheet in ten matches.
Four of Panama’s last five matches have produced over 2.5 total goals.
