Brest – Clermont Predictions and Preview

  • If Nantes fail to win the day before this clash between two in-form teams, then Brest can seal Ligue 1 safety with two weeks to spare by winning here. Lately, they’ve not been short of the mentality needed to play their part, taking three clean-sheet home wins (as part of a four-game winning streak at home) across the preceding five league rounds.
  • A fifth straight home win in Ligue 1 action is something Brest have never managed in any top-flight appearance this century. And the Pirates also have a psychological edge to help them break new ground in that regard, having run out 3-1 winners in October’s reverse fixture with Jérémy Le Douaron rounding off Brest’s goals that day.
  • Still not out of the running for an unlikely top-five berth, Clermont are hopeful of sealing a European debut in 2023/24. A 2-1 win over Lyon in the previous round made it seven without defeat for the Lancers (W6, D1), but they will likely need a perfect three-game finish to have any chance of producing a tangible reward from their sophomore season amongst the elite.
  • Curiously, that win over Lyon was the fourth within Clermont’s current unbeaten run to end 2-1, and the third to see Pascal Gastien’s men come from behind to prevail. However, the Stade Francis-Le Blé’s next visitors aren’t used to early setbacks when travelling, as they are still the only Ligue 1 side yet to concede a goal inside the opening 15 minutes on hostile turf!
  • Players to watch: In addition to netting during the reverse clash, Le Douaron has also been the decisive scorer in Brest’s five latest home wins. Also finding the net last Sunday was Grejohn Kyei, who scored both goals in Clermont’s fightback against Lyon, meaning that half of his six most recent strikes have been equalisers (for 1-1) from the penalty spot.
  • Hot stat: Brest have failed to score before half-time in five of their previous six home H2Hs vs Clermont.
